Chapter 6

“Something’s not right,” Charlie said as he held up a hand, stopping Xander in his place.

“What do you mean?” Xander gave him a quizzical look as he studied Charlie’s alert features. Every muscle in his body was tense, and his golden irises had dilated, giving them an animalistic look as he stared out into the surrounding forest.

“Someone’s watching us.” Charlie bent down and pulled the dagger from its sheath strapped to the side of his boot.

Xander dropped to his knees, feeling suddenly exposed without Charlie’s larger frame shielding him. Xander reached for his own knife, but the cold piece of metal in his hand did little to ease his nowracing heart. He hated fighting, mostly because without his powers he was useless at it.

A moving shadow in the distance caught Xander’s attention. Then he saw another one and another. “How many do you think there are?” Xander whispered. He was trying stay as quiet as possible.

“I’ve counted at least five.” Charlie’s eyes glowed in the darkening sky light. Night would be upon them soon.

Charlie shoved Xander backward just as a flash of something whizzed past him in the exact spot his head had been in only moments ago. The object collided with a thunk into the dirt ground. Xander stared as he tried to make out what it was in the dim lighting. It was an arrow.

“Come on, we’ve got to move.” Charlie was obviously no longer worried about speaking quietly. Their cover was already blown. He extended his hand for Xander, and Xander took it, allowing the larger man to pull him to his feet.

They ran through the forest as fast as they could, well, as fast as Xander could. He was sure Charlie could’ve gone faster, but the man was keeping true to his word. He was staying by Xander’s side, protecting him from their unknown attackers. The limbs flicked against Xander’s skin as Charlie kept dragging him. Xander glanced next to him and spotted a figure on either end of them. They weren’t going to be able to outrun them, not with Xander’s limited abilities.

“Just shift and go without me,” Xander pleaded with Charlie. They were outnumbered and out powered, and by their use of arrows, Xander knew they weren’t dealing with vampires. There was no way Charlie could take them all, and if he stayed with Xander, he’d only be caught in the crossfire. They wanted him, not Charlie.

“Are you an idiot?” Charlie’s question caught him off guard, and he stopped his advances suddenly. Xander collided with his backside and landed on his ass. Charlie turned to face him, his eyes glowing a vibrant golden color. It was no longer Charlie staring at him. It was the wolf inside him. “I’m not going to leave you here to die. I swore I would protect you, and I meant it.”

Xander just looked at him, too shocked to say anything back. It was just a job. He’d only been a hired help. What did he care if Xander died here tonight? This job wasn’t worth his life.
